Activist: Pro-Palestinian boat en route to Gaza

JERUSALEM (AP) ? An activist says a boat of pro-Palestinian advocates from eight countries is en route to Gaza in the latest attempt to break Israel's naval blockade.

Dror Feiler, an Israeli activist on board, says the boat left Naples on Sunday and aims to reach Gaza in mid-October. He said Monday the boat is carrying items such as cement, basketballs, musical instruments and theater lighting equipment.

Israel imposed the blockade after Hamas militants seized control of Gaza in 2007.

It eased the closure in 2010 after a naval raid killed nine Turkish activists on board another Gaza-bound flotilla. Some restrictions, including the naval blockade, remain in place. Israel says the closure is needed to keep Hamas from obtaining weapons.

Israel has not said whether it will try to stop the boat.

WHO: 'Brain-eating amoeba' kills 10 in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? A waterborne parasite commonly known as "brain-eating amoeba" has killed 10 people in Pakistan's largest city, a Pakistani official with the World Health Organization said Tuesday.

The amoeba ? Naegleria fowleri ? lives in warm, unclean water. It can infect the human nervous system, though this occurs rarely. In those cases it is difficult to treat and can lead to death in about a week.

Musa Khan, in charge of WHO's Disease Early Warning System in Pakistan, said the deaths were reported in the city of Karachi from March to September.

He said municipal authorities launched a campaign in the area to ensure the supply of clean water to residents. Health officials are carrying out a public awareness campaign to educate and guide people and doctors across Karachi about the disease, he said.

Other parts of Pakistan have also been alerted but so far no cases have been reported elsewhere, Khan said.

"There is no need to panic over these deaths," he stressed. "There is a remote chance for the spread of this deadly disease."

He said people don't usually get the brain-affecting form of the disease by drinking water, but by swimming in dirty water or cleaning their nostrils with contaminated water.

From the nostrils, the parasite travels to the brain where it destroys tissue. Symptoms include fever, nausea, vomiting, stiff neck and headaches.

The disease has killed people in other countries as well.

A U.S. man who was teaching his daughter to swim in a southwestern Indiana lake died in September, within weeks after getting the infection, according to his family.

Waylon Abel, 30, went to a hospital with headache, nausea, vomiting and fever. He was given antibiotics and returned 12 hours later, when he was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis.

In July, a South Carolina boy also died from this rare brain infection, according to U.S. health officials.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 32 infections were reported in the U.S from 2002 to 2011. Only one person has survived out of 123 known U.S. cases from 1962 to 2011.

Angela Merkel will face protests during Greek visit

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit Greece next week to discus keeping the country in the eurozone. Large displays against her are expected. Many Greeks blame Merkel's austerity measures for their nation's troubles.

Many Greeks blame Merkel, who has publicly chastised them for much of the past three years, for the nation's plight. Opponents, some of whom have caricatured her as a bullying Nazi, have promised protests on Tuesday during her first visit to?Greece?since the euro zone crisis erupted there in 2009.

"She does not come to support?Greece, which her policies have brought to the brink. She comes to save the corrupt, disgraced and servile political system," said?Alexis Tsipras, who leads the opposition Syriza alliance. "We will give her the welcome she deserves."

About 6,000 policemen will be deployed in the capital for her 6-hour visit, turning the city centre into a no-go zone for protest marches planned by labour unions and opposition parties.

"We don't want her here," said?Yannis Georgiou, 72, who has seen his pension cut by one third. "We will take to the streets against austerity and against the government. Maybe Merkel will hear something and see what we're going through."

Merkel's visit is a sign of?Germany's support for the coalition government of Prime Minister?Antonis Samaras?as it struggles to agree new budget cuts with international lenders, overcome the objections of reluctant coalition partners and cope with rising public anger.

After toying with the idea of a Greek exit from the euro zone in the first half of 2012, Merkel has come full circle and decided the risks of the country leaving are too high, especially with a German election looming next year.

Aptly dubbed ?The Last Homely House East of the Sea? ? Rivendell is an Elven village located on the edge of a narrow gorge that is surrounded by soaring mountains decorated with trees and Niagra Falls-like waterfalls that look more like a postcard than real life. Inspired by Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland (probably the most beautiful place on Earth), Rivendell?s climate was temperate with comfortably warm summers and snowy but not Winterfell-like winters.

As the saying goes, looks aren?t everything. The value of a home is more than just numbers or how many magical waterfalls add to curb appeal; it?s also just as much about those nights the family gathers and passes down old stories, or that peace of mind and feeling of calm that rushes over you when you come in through those doors from a hard day at the office or trekking through Middle Earth without shoes. If the value of a home is peace, good times and relaxation, then Rivendell is worth a whole lot.

A recurring theme we see in The ?Hobbit? and ?The Lord of the Rings? is that Rivendell constantly opened its arms to weary travelers and those in need of some help or some plain old fashioned peace of mind. In LOTR, the Elves of Rivendell take Bilbo in after he chose to leave his home and family in the Shire behind and retire there after his 111th nameday (A Don Draper ad for Rivendell might be: ?Rivendell, the Florida of Middle Earth?). Not only was it a place to retire comfortably, it was also a place that opened its doors to Frodo when he was near death and it also hosted the Council of Elrond, which made the difficult decision to destroy the Ring.

The actual home of Elrond (founder of Rivendell) and his family is as grand and larger than life as you?d expect it to be. Full of countless breathtaking rooms, sculptures and art, balconies, libraries, gardens and other zen like spaces; it?s no wonder that Bilbo decided to go there to concentrate on writing his memoirs. The centerpiece of the home is ?Hall of Fire? which was reserved on most days for contemplation and thinking, but also served as the main area used for singing, feasting and story telling during celebrations. With an equal mix of quiet reflection and meditation time with feasting and singing thrown in?Rivendell sounds like my kind of place.
